EU Simulation Modules
The European Union Center of Excellence at the UW-Madison has been developing EU Simulation Modules (EUSM), with the goal of integrating EU Studies into the curriculum of a wide variety of social science and professional programs.
What is a Simulation? An EU simulation is an innovative way to bring this knowledge to students. Similar to a Model UN program, EU simulations provide a better understanding of European integration and the constraints confronting EU member states, as well as a greater appreciation for cultural diversity. Students also acquire valuable skills such as public speaking, expository writing, the use of logic and reasoning, group negotiations and problem solving.
Why Modules? The great hurdle to simulations is the relatively large amount of time it takes to gather materials for the simulation, which has resulted in their being limited to large-scale projects in programs that are EU-centered. The objective of the EUCE's EUSM project is to create compact modules that faculty can easily incorporate into courses already planned – courses that may even be outside European Area Studies, which nonetheless would benefit from a hands-on examination of EU policy on a particular topic.
What is included in a Simulation Module? Materials necessary for a simulation – national policy papers, EU documents, press clippings, audio and video clips are available online. Guides for instructors are also provided.
The EUCE has developed simulation modules on the following topics:
- The Chocolate Directive
- The Parental Leave Directive
